Autumn in Boston

I think by now it's a widely known fact that traveling the world is a dream of mine.
I will take any chance I get to see a new place.
I want to see and experience all of it. Every walk of life, every season, every culture.
When I'm getting on a plane or in a car or train I feel a calm, peace.
I am right where I'm supposed to be and I am happy.

When I get to take my babies along with me? Well, that's just icing on the cake.

This particular trip had us heading to New England.
DREAM VACATION! Autumn in New York. Need I say more?!

I will preface these posts by an apology about all the gushing.
The colors, the city, the girls, the cheese... the rowboats. I will definitely be gushing.

Mix all that in with a few stories about Kate peeing in the plane while she slept,
Ella holding hands with the lady next to me during the whole flight home much to
the mortification of Jaclyne, fights over which way to take, broken luggage, selfish companions
who eat ALL of the cannoli while you're trying to text a friend (AHEM!!), frantically having to redistribute
10 pounds worth of extra stuff to who knows where so as to avoid a $75 overweight
luggage fee, and just about a million other things that can happen when you're stuck with the
same 3 people for 9 days straight and you're traveling with children...
We had quite the adventure and I loved every second of it.

It was literally a dream for me. Managed to cross off 3 bucket list items while I was at it.
Not bad, if you ask me...

We flew out of Long Beach to Boston, MA...

I did it again, friends. I didn't want to waste a whole vacation
day flying from LA to Boston so I booked a red-eye flight.
And once again, I hated it. I always think it will be better the
next time. It never, ever is. Ever. This time it was worse because Jac
gave me a sleeping pill to help me sleep. When you take a sleeping
pill but can't really fully sleep, it makes for some quite embarrassing situations.
At one point, I'm told that I was sleeping on the floor in the plane.
Seriously. And I drooled.

I suppose giving up sleep in order to gain a day visiting a gorgeous
city that's rich in American history isn't such a bad trade off...
The girls slept the entire flight. They really are amazing little travelers.

By the time we checked into our hotel, The Onyx, it was nearing 7am and the city was
starting to light up. We left our bags in the room and made our way down Congress St.

I hadn't even seen a red or orange Maple tree
yet and I was already smitten. The streets were lined with crunchy oak leaves and
old brick sidewalks. We were surrounded by hundreds of years of American history
and the air was cool and crisp. I couldn't have asked for more.
But Boston delivered more. And more and more!

The girls were excited to finally be able to run free after
being on the plane and in taxis for hours. Ella took advantage of it.

The GIANT macaroni was very well loved by my girls.

Shopping for this trip was fun. In California, our weather all summer and through the fall
has been very un-fall like. Hot, almost 100 degree weather at times.
Totally not consistent with what Fall feels like in my head.
So looking at the 7 day forecast and seeing it would be chilly -rainy even,
I went a little nuts on the fall wardrobes. These boots were a favorite purchase.
I never get to wear tall boots over jeans. I have always wanted to.
I love the way it looks. I'm thrilled that my girls get to. They love it.

Faneuil Hall was our first official visitors stop in Boston.

Inside Quincy Market... I tried out the new panorama setting on my iPhone. Pretty cool!!

The waterfront

We spent the day walking around the city.
Jaclyne had researched all the places we wanted to see
and this was definitely one of them...
Mike's Pastry... Pretty amazing cannolis, if you ask me.
Autumn was in full bloom here. The streets were gorgeous.
Cornstalks on the street lights, Boston Ivy (in Boston!!) on all the gates starting to
change from deep green to fiery shades of orange and red...

The girls took turns napping while we took in the city on our first day.

One of my favorite sights were the brick sidewalks.
I love the look of brick and hope to own a house with a brick wall in it someday.
It's such a wonderful color and adds so much character. I almost fell a few times
when my shoe got caught on the lines between but it was totally worth it.

We made our way to Boston Common through the rain.
One of my favorite things in a big city is a sanctuary from the
hustle and bustle. I've always adored that about NY.
We found that very same beauty here and it was so beautiful!

This is where I had my first true encounter with the gloriousness that is
what I always picture fall looks like in my ideal world.

Boston Common is where my girls learned what it was to walk around the grass and
look for the most beautiful red  and orange leaves they could find. It even smelled
different than a California park. I was in awe of it all.

The only reason I tore myself away from this spot was
because Ella had to pee. We walked and found our way to
the Public Garden almost by accident. I have a feeling I am going to
run out of adjectives and good descriptions by the end of this series
of posts about our trip to New England... it's only the first day post and I
already feel redundant in saying that the sheer beauty of visiting
an old city like this, where the Fathers of our country spent time and
frequented these very same places is just mind blowing.

Here, we fell upon an adorable little monument dedicated to the ducklings
from a childrens' book by Robert McCloskey, Make Way for Ducklings.
I love that my girls got to be photographed here and equally love that we have this beautiful
book to read to them to show them all the places they visited in Boston to go along with this story.

Since Kate was missing a week of school in order to be here with us, I asked
her teachers to give us some schoolwork so that she wouldn't fall behind because of it.
Let me tell you, this girl took such pride and enjoyment in doing this homework.
It had her shy-smilin' all over the place! During every meal we sat at, she would
rush through eating so she could complete another page of work.
She even made her pancakes wait!

We took a tour on a bus where both girls fell asleep again followed by both Jaclyne and I
also falling asleep. Really safe. It was at this point where we decided that maybe we should
take a nap and actually be alert enough to enjoy the sights we were being shown.

This was the last photo I took before I fell asleep on the tour bus.

Our night was concluded by a pretty amazing dinner at the Omni Parker House Restaurant.
It was here, in this very same place, that JFK proposed marriage to Jackie O!

Cheers!

The famous Parker House Rolls.

Day 1 down...Our next stop - Providence, RI.
