"There is no more — a higher calling — than raising children who are kind, who live with grace and who are going to be generous human beings in the world. There isn’t anything greater than that."

New Ventures...

"Believe in something big.
Your life is worth a noble motive."
Walter Anderson

Here's a something big for you: I am now a college student.
It feels good to say that. It feels really good.
I like that in 4 or so years, I will have a degree and
I will see the world differently. It feels really nice that
I am able to show my kids that it's never too late
and that education and bettering yourself is important.

I've been saying for years now that I wanted to go to college. But a deadline would
pass and I would just shrug my shoulders and say, "Oh well, next semester." and so on...
I got tired of not holding myself accountable. I got tired of talking for nothing.
I didn't want to be that person. So, I did something about it.

All the stars aligned for this to become a reality. I made all the
grant and application deadlines on time (miracle). I got all the paperwork
signed and mailed in. I made it to the assessment tests and orientations.
I stayed up all night while in Las Vegas, paid $20 in internet fees at a public computer
in order to be able to register for my classes at 6am when the system opened.
I was wait-listed for 2 of my classes but magically got into them.
Even made it through the first week of classes without a hitch.
All with a husband and kids and a very full life.

I rallied my people in my corner. My husband, my best friend Jac, my mom, my sisters, my friends...
my village -- those amazing people who want me to succeed and will
do anything in order for my children to be cared for and loved, all pledged
to help in anyway they could, to support me and encourage me in this venture.
I wouldn't have been able to even make it to that first day of class
had it not been for every single one of them. I am one lucky girl.

My self-portrait on my first day of college...

"I think a photography class should be a requirement
in all educational programs because it
makes you see the world rather than just look at it."
Author Unknown

This semester I'm enrolled in English 1 and Photography...  so far, I'm loving both.
My professors are funny. I like that.

It was better than I thought it would be, being in class.
I felt grown-up in ways I never have before.
I feel not grown-up often and it bothers me because
at 32 and raising 3 small children, I always think I should
act and feel more like an adult.

Right now, I do.

(thanks for the LBCC goodies, Nicole)

That's where I am. Excited about the future but loving the right now.
Bouquets of newly sharpened pencils will always hold new meaning to me.

PS -- I got some of my favorite movies on DVD in the mail today.
(I already had them, but on VHS)
I am excited to find some free moments to sit and enjoy them...

Winding Down

Summer is winding down... pool days are getting fewer and farther between.
I've started switching out our regular decor for glittered maple leaves
and sunflowers. I'm starting little by little so that people don't think I've lost my mind.
Even with just my leaves out, I've already been told by 3 people that autumn isn't
officially here for another month!! My internal clock goes by a different set of standards.
That's all that matters to me. Let them mock my leaves. As soon as I find it, my apple-
shaped cookie jar is comin' out and it will make me smile every time I see it.

As August comes to a close, I've been on a mad mission to get everything ready
and settled before school starts. Carpool schedules have been hammered out and posted on the fridge
underneath Kate's ballet recital program and Charlie's citizen of the month award from last year.
Their new school wardrobes hang in their closets, crisp and ready to wear.
That new clothes smell makes me smile. First day outfit ideas swirl in my mind.

I made sure that I got Kate the cutest damn apron I
could find for her to wear during painting and art time at school.

My office looks like the entire school supply section of Target threw up in it.
Who knew two kids could need so many markers and
crayons in order to succeed in elementary school! I mean seriously??!

Lunch boxes and backpacks have been carefully thought out and
purchased. I've been reading a lot about nutrition for children and their
daily intake needs and this year, I am excited about making their lunches healthy and fun.
That is saying a lot for me. I am that mom who dreads making lunches all day long and
complains through making and packing the entire lunch that night before.
I am curious to see how it will make a difference in their
behaviors and habits. In case you're curious and want to check it out too, here is
the book that inspired it all... Lunch Lessons
We'll see how long this will last...

I keep my mind busy because otherwise I will go nuts.
Every chance she gets, Kate tells us she doesn't want to go to school. I am sad about that.
I want her to be okay with going since I have so much anxiety about it.
I try to be really careful not to let her feel that anxiety. I don't need her taking on
my hesitations as her own. I know she can do this. She is smart as a whip, my girl.
This is just the beginning of her school career. No turning back after this.
For the next 12+ years, come September, she won't be staying home with me
while big brother goes to school any more. We won't get that time together.
This is when I am supposed to take a step back and let her do her own thing.
Guide her in the right direction, yes, but also give a little and let her learn and grow
all on her own. This is when she will make her friends and have her own life
separate from mine. I am just having a really hard time reconciling that in my mind.
I can't wait to be able to greet Kate and Charlie at the school gates and
hear all they have to say about what they learned and who they played with.

In my heart, I know it will all be okay and that we will find a balance that will work
for all of us. A perfect rhythm of still letting them be little and getting to cuddle them
all while standing back while they stretch their wings and get ready to fly.

But that first day? I already know I will be a mess.
At least I can know to be prepared with Kleenex and a shoulder to cry on...

Some snapshots into our end of summer winding down...

Haircuts for the new school year...

Bowling night

Ella was excited and cheered for every ball thrown down that alley.

Girls' day out

Whirlwind Vegas trip for my baby brother and sister's 21st birthdays....
The old man was tired ... ha ha!

Here's to growing up, not just them, but me too.
I'm starting a new journey too that I'm really excited to share with you.
I'm gaining courage and confidence in a new way that feels very
much like it's exactly where I need to be... at the exact right time.
I can't tell you how great that feels.

Lots of love and kisses 'til next time!

Summer Loves

The last few weeks have been filled with summer love (and some summer exhaustion)...

But mainly love.

Really making an effort to be happy about where my
life is at any given moment has been a real treat for me lately.

That isn't to say I don't wish some things were different.
Or that I wish I was anywhere but here sometimes.
'Cause I get that too.

But we've been blowing through my summer wish list
faster than I can add more things to it. The kids are happy
and sun-kissed. They're relaxed and thoroughly enjoying our
lax summer schedule. Oh, we have meltdowns. (Both them and me...)
Big ones. But we're learning to bounce back quicker than usual.
Something I've had to really work on.

Eric's been working crazy hours so we've had a few fun midnight swimming
sessions with the kids so they can spend some memorable time with him.
They especially love that. That pool is the best
investment we've ever made. They are in it nearly every single day.
Kate especially. She is a true little fish.

This little one just recently started loving the pool. She goes under water
for the first time and is quickly becoming a little fish herself.

They love playing Marco Polo.
Charlie always accuses Kate of cheating... I think he's right.

Brother always loses his shorts. He needs to get smaller trunks!

Our summer lovin'...

Beach day with Nicole and the girls

I love that she sticks out her tongue like me when she concentrates...

Balboa Island boat ride... Knocked off  one thing off my summer wish list
while doing one I never even thought to put on there in the first place...
a boat ride. It was such a beautiful day... watching the sun set as my babies took
turns steering the boat with my best friend? It doesn't get much better than that.

I love my girl's french braids. I love that she loves them...

My 2 favorite little sisters... Their relationship is the reason I had kids
to begin with. They love fiercely but fight just as fiercely...

Balboa is a gorgeous beach town.

My nervous driver... he wears his worry on his face, this little guy.

We caught a seal trying to jump onto a man's boat... funny to see. Better him than us.

As the sun dipped into the ocean and I was sitting there watching my kids have
this experience, my heart filled with love. I am so lucky to lead the life that I do.
I am so grateful for all the amazing people that I have in my corner. My people.
I thank God every single day.

After our boat ride, we went for the famous balboa bars.
Charlie and Kate went for the frozen bananas and Ella?
Well, Ella always has to be unique. Sister opted for just sprinkles.
I love her.

Boys day. Universal Studios, Hollywood.
Charlie's been itching to go on the Transformer Ride for a while now,
so I promised him we'd go before the end of summer.

On that day, Jaclyne and I finally realized -- We're old!!!
Those rides seriously made me sick! I wanted to throw up half the day,
the other half I wanted to pass out from heat exhaustion. It was 115 degrees!
I am spoiled by Disneyland. There, all the rides have AC. At Universal, they're hot and stuffy.

Anyway, I digress...
The boys had the time of their lives. The same look my girls get on their
faces when they encounter a real-life Disney princess, the boys got when
they saw their beloved Optimus Prime. It was great to spend a day with
just them, talking about their favorite stuff and enjoying chili fries and Powerades.

They were so excited they actually skipped the entire way into the ride.

Angry Optimus faces...

Back to school shopping has been really fun. The tickle in my belly that fall is quickly
approaching has now turned into a full blown burning and I am loving it!!!

We've got a few more weeks of summer lovin' to do...
