My Rockstar

Pride doesn't even begin to describe it.

I knew he was a good kid.
I knew he was a smart kid...

But today, picking up my boy from school, when he ran to me
and told me he had a surprise for me, with such pride in his own little eyes
that it almost made me cry...my full cup just ran over.

He told me that he'd been chosen as the first Citizen of the Month.
He whipped out his award and his certificate to the Elephant Bar
along with a little gift one of the teachers gave him.

He beamed and I didn't care how uncool it made me
or how embarrassed he was in front of his friends
I screamed and jumped and whooped and hugged him so tight I thought I might break him.

Charlie was mildly embarrassed but mainly so, so proud of himself.

We were so proud, in fact, that we decided to take him to use his certificate
to the Elephant Bar right after Kate was done with her dance class.

I thought I'd give him a special little treat and let him stay up a bit past his bedtime.
But as fate would have it, I was wrong.
Apparently, the bedtime routine I worked so hard to instill in him really, really worked.
Because halfway during dinner, literally, halfway into eating
his lettuce wraps the boy fell asleep right there at the table.

 I wish I'd have taken a photo.

I wish that pretty often. I get mad at myself for missing out on moments captured...
But then I have to stop and remind myself that there will be some moments that
have to be left undocumented in our lives because we are busy being IN the moment
and actually living our lives. I can't always be behind that camera snapping away
because then I'd miss out on too much.

It may seem like I share a lot about our lives on my blog but
the reality is, I probably only share 20% of it all.

I like to share moments like this...

and this...
Her tights were WAAAYY too loose. I need to get her some that fit her better.

and this...

She climbed up and helped herself to Kate's cereal while Kate went to use the restroom...

and even this...

That, my friends is a (nonfat) pumpkin spice latte...

What I'm learning most from mothering these 3 little souls is that it's the little moments
that mean the most and should be celebrated with enthusiasm. It may just seem like a silly
little award to most people, but to us, to our world, it's a little reminder that
we are on the right track in raising good, giving, and self-confident people.

Charlie has taken a really big interest in drawing these days.
He loves to take things from his imagination and bring it to life with
plain white paper and a box of crayons. It fills him.
He can spend a whole hour sitting at the kitchen table with his tongue peeking out
of the corner of his mouth, concentrating on his masterpiece.

Now, they may just be every day little drawings that every kid makes to you
but to him, they're something special so I make a big deal about it.

I told him that he has a really big talent for it, that he is an artist.
I didn't know how much that comment meant to him until last week, when he
was talking to his friends and didn't know I was within earshot.

He was telling his friends that he loves to draw and is very good at it.
"I am an artist" he said very seriously while nodding his head.
And more importantly, he believed it.

I may never know what that compliment did to him.
But I do know that it will stay with him.
His confidence was boosted.

He even took it a step further and complimented Kate on a drawing she made.
He told her if she kept practicing like he did, maybe she could become an artist someday too.

The things we say to them really matter.
Kids really listen when we talk to them.

Charlie is living proof of that.

I adore that boy. Every single ounce of his big heart.

Who knows? I may just be living with the next Van Gogh.
What do you think?

Autumn Dinner

I busted out the Fall Decor at home.
Aren't you surprised that these weren't up a month ago?
I am.

Having the house look so warm and inviting totally put me in a Martha Stewart mood.
I decided to invite my parents, the twins and J over for a festive Autumn dinner.

Pork roast, carrots, broccoli, garlic mashed potatoes
Drooling yet?

You should be. It was that good. The roast was in the oven all day long.

The house smelled heavenly.

(Although, I must say, I picked the most un-Autumn day EVER to
have an Autumn dinner. 115 degrees outside. Need I say more?)

And then there was dessert. Sweet, decadent, perfect dessert...
I dusted off the trusty old Butter Yellow KitchenAid.
It's been too long since it's been used.
I plan to use it often in the upcoming months with all the fun baking I want to do.

Mrs. Bakerella never disappoints. Ever.
I love her, I really do.

She just blogged about her Easy Apple Cake so I decided to try it.

I didn't have, nor do I like dates so I just added extra apples.

The finished product

and finally the little slice of heaven drizzled with a brown sugar, butter sauce.

A little after dinner snuggling...
It's so sweet how much she loves her big brother and sister.

and then she gets up and does this with the crayon box...
Oh Ella.

Hugs for Grandma and Grandpa before they leave...

I'm so grateful to have my parents around and involved.
My kids adore them to pieces and I will always do everything
in my power to make sure that never changes.

What a great way to start the week.

I am trying to make a conscious effort to be a happier and more positive person.
In the face of a crappy economy and tough times for everyone,
it's so easy to let it get you down in the dumps.

When there are days like these - having that positive outlook is so easy.

An Ella Funny

Ella decided she wanted to go outside.
She didn't want to wait for me to open the door for her so she
took matters into her own hands.

She tore my screen off the door and pushed it out of her way!

She even packed herself a little bag of toys and books for her excursion.

The photos are a little dark as I had to move quickly to catch her in the act...

We are SOOO in for it with this little firecracker.
Our little Ella... she makes us laugh every day.

Jaclyne just blogged about her first birthday party here, if you're interested!!!

Bicycles on the Beach

Charlie got to go on a "date" with us today.
No sisters allowed.

He loves to ride his bike so Eric &I took him
biking on the beach with Didi, Nichere and Rachelle.

I think it is the understatement of the year if I said that my butt hurts and my legs
will truly fall off by tomorrow. I am sore!
I did a great job, if I do say so myself. I kept up and rode on like a trooper.
I did speak to God a few times... searching for the strength to not cry...lol.

Hey, no judgement allowed!

In my defense, it had been probably 15 years since I'd been on a bicycle!
On my maiden voyage, we rode from Huntington Beach to Newport Beach.

It was a beautiful, breezy 80 degree day and in spite of the exercise (ew) I enjoyed myself.

I liked giving Charlie all of my attention.
He liked it too. He was a happy little boy today.

When he tired of riding, he and his daddy stopped for a dip in the ocean while we rode on.
He collected shells for himself and his sisters and laughed at the waves
that knocked him over a few times...

Buddies

If you don't hear from me for the next week, don't be worried.
I'm probably up to my ears in Bengay and ice packs for my sore muscles...

Have a fantastic week, friends!

Princesses and Villains

I don't normally post about going to Disneyland because we're there so
freakin' often that it would end up taking over my entire blog.
But there are some days, like today, that are totally post-worthy because I never want to forget them.

Ella is completely aware of the joy that is Disneyland now.
She sees the car pulling off at the Disneyland Dr. exit off the 5 and she actually tries
to say Disneyland. Her feet start going a million miles a minute and she grins from ear to ear.
Another Disney baby - I love it!

It's completely decorated for the Fall season now and let me tell you, it doesn't disappoint.

The thing Kate loved most about today was getting a
Pumpkin Mousse Cupcake in a Mickey Pumpkin ceramic mug.

She was excited about this mug because she could take it
home and have me make her hot chocolates in it with marshmallows.

Kate is still in love with the characters. She could spend an entire day there and
not do a single ride, yet still be happy as long as she got to have the princesses
and every other character she sees sign her autograph book.

Kate with her beloved princesses. Every time she wears a shirt and it falls
off of her shoulder, she giggles to herself and says, " I'm like Jasmine."
She has also decided that she wants to be Ariel for Halloween and Ella can be Flounder.

Because Halloween will soon be upon us, the villain characters have been wandering the park.
These don't even scare Kate. She marches right up to them, with her shy smile
and hands then her book. She tells us to wait to take pictures until after they have signed
and she is ready to pose with them. Demanding, that little one is.
Here she is waiting nervously to have the villains sign her book.

Captain Hook
Her favorite villain was the Queen. (From Snow White)

The Queen took a liking to Kate, although you can't see it in her face.
She offered Kate her hand and my oh-so-trusting daughter reached out and grabbed on.
Together, they walked down the street. Kate was so proud.

Our night ended on a sweet note... with honey, that is.
The girls wanted to climb on Pooh's honey pots after riding
(my favorite) blustery, Pooh honey bee ride.

It's no wonder they call it The Happiest Place on Earth...

The happiness it brings the kids is just pure magic.
I heart Disneyland... a lot.

Good morning, Sunshine!

This is how I'm usually greeted in the morning.
She stands and doesn't make a sound until I notice her.
(also scares the bejesus out of me...EVERY MORNING)
and yes, I googled bejesus to make sure I spelled it right.
It is a word. In my research I found some pretty interesting definitions of it.

noun: runny poop
or
A word commonly used to express great surprise or fear.

Obviously, I meant the latter. Ha ha.

Gotta love the PBJ beard.

...and then this little scene has me smilin' from ear to ear. Every morning.
Ella went from screaming and arching her back at the very sight of Kate
to absolutely adoring her. Seeing Kate in the morning makes Ella immensely happy.

Happy Wednesday friends!
I was very uplifted last night at church.
A little bit of kindness goes a long, long way.
Give someone a smile today...

"A smile can brighten the darkest day."
